NJDOT intends to "scope" Route 1
widening project though South Brunswick
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced today that it intends begin "scoping" a proposed widening project of Route 1 through the Township of South Brunswick sometime early next year.
"The department has been working diligently with South Brunswick officials to determine the best course on how to proceed with this project. We are all in agreement that a major investment in the Route1 corridor through the township is needed and that we must continue our work to develop a consensus within the community," Deputy Transportation Commissioner Stanley Rosenblum said.
Scoping involves conducting detailed engineering studies of the proposed project leading up to acquiring the necessary environmental approvals. Once this phase is complete, the project would move into a formal design phase.
"On behalf of Commissioner Haley, I extend thanks to Senator Inverso, Assemblyman Kramer and Assemblywoman Wright for their continuing support of this project. They have been tireless in their efforts to make this project a reality," Rosenblum added.
The proposed project includes adding an additional lane on a seven-mile stretch of Route 1 in both directions from Independence Way to Finnegans Lane in South Brunswick. The NJDOT completed traffic studies earlier this year which suggest a widening is needed.
The NJDOT has already held a meeting with South Brunswick officials and will be holding a community outreach meeting in November to discuss its traffic analysis and review potential project alternatives. The NJDOT expects to begin the scoping process in early 1998.
