Department of Transportation

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) Transportation Mobility mission is to alleviate traffic congestion and travel disruptions that inconvenience motorists and make New Jersey's highways more efficient and safe for those who travel them every day.

The best way to manage congestion is to control the factors causing it. TSM does this on a daily basis by taking a systems approach to managing New Jersey's highways and providing "smart solutions" to assist motorists get to their destinations quickly and safely. Some of the "smart solutions" that make a motorist's driving experience efficient and safe include:

  • reducing the time it takes to clear an incident and re-open travel lanes by working along with State and local police to respond to incidents and emergencies

  • providing information about traffic delays, detour routes, construction and safety related messages via Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)

  • using real-time traffic reporting and providing customer access to traffic cameras on the 511NJ Travel Information Web site

  • providing travel times so that motorists know in advance how long it will take to reach their destination.

  • offering assistance to disabled motorists through the Safety Service Patrol

Other benefits to the motorist include:

Through a variety of additional programs, TSM is responsible for deploying Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)/Mobility and Systems Engineering and other systems operations strategies that enhance mobility throughout the state such as:

  • utilizing state-of-the-art technology on New Jersey highways such as adaptive traffic signal systems or connected traffic signals to optimize traffic signal performance

  • optimizing NJDOT's more than 2500 signalized intersections and implementing adaptive traffic signal systems to make traffic flow more efficiently along highly congested corridors

  • developing the systems necessary to make our highways compatible with Connected and Autonomous Vehicle Technology
