Statement by Commissioner John J. Haley Jr.
on Senate approval of ISTEA measure (S.1173)
"Today’s action by the Senate is timely, and it’s a very promising step. We’re pleased that the bill increases overall funding for New Jersey highways and, in particular, transit. However, New Jersey is not yet satisfied with respect to our overall share of federal highway funds.
This bill is a start, and there’s still a lot of work to be done in the House. However, it’s encouraging that overall funding levels are up, and that no substantial changes occurred in the transit funding formulas.
Even though overall funding has been increased, our goal is to further improve New Jersey’s percentage of transportation funds. We’re counting on our delegation in the House to further strengthen New Jersey’s funding share when it resumes deliberations on ‘BESTEA.’"
