$1.5 million in pedestrian safety grants announced
Governor Christie Whitman and Transportation Commissioner John J. Haley, Jr. today announced $1.5 million in pedestrian safety grants to twenty-three New Jersey communities.
"These grants will improve safety for schoolchildren walking to school," the Governor said. "The Transportation Trust Fund enables us to fund so many worthy projects, and I can think of no projects more deserving than those that make walking or bicycling to school safer for our children."
"The dedication of $1.5 million to this school and pedestrian safety program signals the start of a concerted effort to expand pedestrian access," Commissioner Haley said. "It is our concrete commitment to promoting and expanding programs devoted to people who walk or bicycle in our state."
NJDOT, through the Transportation Trust Fund, annually provides $130 million in grants to municipalities and counties for transportation infrastructure improvements.
Attached is a list of the twenty three communities receiving grants.
