Treasurer Announces Intent to Award Bid
on Enhanced Motor Vehicle Inspections Project

"After a careful review of the bid submitted by Parsons, and after having conducted an economic analysis as required by the law, it is my determination that the bid meets the necessary criteria and that a contract should be awarded," said DiEleuterio.

DiEleuterio stressed that the new system will create nearly double the number of jobs that presently exist for inspection lane workers.

"There are 402 jobs associated with the current inspection system. It is our estimate that the new system will require 745 inspection lane employees, which means job opportunities not only for the people who staff existing facilities, but for hundreds of others as well," said DiEleuterio.

In addition, DiEleuterio pointed out that a new program for in-terminal school bus inspections, run by the Division of Motor Vehicle Services, will be created and that the current driver road testing program will be expanded, making room for a combined 68 additional positions.

"The bottom line is that the new system will create opportunities for all current motor vehicle inspection personnel," said the treasurer.

In addition to creating jobs, DiEleuterio said, the bid submitted by Parsons would be a savings for the state. As part of its bid, Parsons quoted a price of $24.25 per inspection for every enhanced inspection it performs. According to a Treasury analysis, that cost would be $26.32 with public employees performing the work.

"Based on the result of our economic analysis, and based on the fact that a contract with Parsons will create opportunities for current employees, I believe it is in the best interests of New Jersey taxpayers to allow this project to proceed," said DiEleuterio.
