DMV Inspection Revisions Begin September 1

All vehicles due for inspection during September must be brought in as usual. Throughout September, both 1-year and 2-year inspection stickers will be issued based on the model year of the vehicle. The existing emissions test will continue to be given.

Odd-number model year vehicles (year ending in 1,3,5,7,9) will be issued 1-year stickers. Even-number model year vehicles (year ending in 0,2,4,6,8) will be issued 2-year stickers and are next due for inspection in the year 2000.

Beginning October 1, a biennial (2-year) inspection cycle will begin. From October 1 through December 31, 1998, only even-number model year cars must be brought for inspection. Vehicles passing inspection will be issued 2-year stickers.

Odd-number model year vehicles do not have to be brought for inspection in October, November and December. Owners of these vehicles can obtain extension stickers to be placed above the existing windshield sticker at any DMV agency or inspection station or at a private inspection station. The extension sticker will indicate that the vehicle is on a longer inspection cycle.

From January 1 to December 31, 1999, only odd-number model year vehicles must be brought for inspection. Two-year inspection stickers will be issued. Owners of even-number model year vehicles, who do not have to bring their vehicles for inspection, will be mailed extension stickers when registration renewals are issued.

The existing emissions test will continue to be given until all inspection stations are converted to perform the new enhanced emissions test. This conversion is scheduled for completion by December, 1999.

Inspection lanes which have the new emissions testing equipment installed prior to completion of the conversion process will have the ability to offer either the existing or new enhanced emissions test. Motorists will have the option of taking either emissions test during this period. Two-year stickers will be issued for passing either emissions test.
