Weinstein as Commissioner of Transportation

"As New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation, we must constantly work to improve our transportation network. I have confidence that Jim will get the job done," Gov. Whitman said.

"Jim's experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead the Department of Transportation," said the Governor. "He served as the first Chairman of the Port of Philadelphia and Camden and as the Vice Chairman of the Delaware River Port Authority. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Maritime Exchange of the Delaware River and Bay Authority and the New Jersey Alliance for Action."

Weinstein was most recently the president of Riverfront Associates, Inc., a Trenton-based public relations and government affairs firm he co-founded in 1990. He was named acting Commissioner of Transportation by Gov. Whitman on December 7, 1998. Weinstein's experience in state government includes serving in the Department of Transportation as Executive Assistant to the Commissioner and Director of Communications from 1983 to 1986. He also served under former Governor Tom Kean as Director of the Governor's Authorities Unit from 1986 through 1989.

"In everything he's done, he's truly distinguished himself, showing great energy and integrity. I know that Jim, who was so helpful to my transition team, will work just as hard as Commissioner of the Department of Transportation," the Governor said.

Gov. Whitman said Weinstein's expertise and experience in state government and transportation issues will help him prepare New Jersey's transportation system for the next century.

The Commissioner of Transportation's duties include presiding as Chairman of the Board of Directors of NJ Transit and serving as a member of the board of each of the state's three toll road authorities. As NJDOT Commissioner, Weinstein has also been nominated to the Port Authority of NY & NJ.

Weinstein is a graduate of Seton Hall University and began his career as a journalist. He currently resides in Moorestown, Burlington County, with his wife Linda Artlip. They have two grown children.
