Target Unsafe Commuter Vans
A two-day effort by state Division of Motor Vehicles inspectors and South Brunswick Township police officers to stop and inspect commuter vans operating to locations within the township found that many of the vehicles had serious safety defects and most of the van drivers were not properly licensed to operate the vehicles, officials said.
The commuter van inspections conducted Monday and today on local streets near Turnpike Interchange 8A were performed at the request and with the assistance of the South Brunswick Township Police Department.
DMV inspectors placed 10 vehicles out-of-service for serious safety defects out of 29 inspected. In addition to mechanical defects, 16 drivers either did not have the required commercial driver’s license or even a regular driver’s license when their credentials were checked.
South Brunswick police officers issued 100 summonses, including citations for unlicensed or improperly licensed drivers, unregistered vehicles, uninsured vehicles, and unsafe vehicles.
"By working proactively with the South Brunswick Police Department, we’ve safeguarded the passengers on these vehicles and also all motorists traveling New Jersey’s roadways," said DMV Director C. Richard Kamin. "These vans had serious safety defects and are unfit to be on the road until each vehicle is repaired and reinspected."
Of the 29 vehicles inspected, 24 were vans. One mini-bus and four full-size buses also were inspected.
Kamin noted that DMV inspectors have performed similar surprise van inspections in other locations.
"We are ready to work with other communities to ensure that safe vehicles are being operated by properly licensed drivers," the DMV Director said.
