Public Open House to be Held for Toms River Residents
Information Center will Provide
Details on New State Inspection Center
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will host a public open house, in conjunction with Parsons Infrastructure & Technology Group, on March 29 from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Ocean County Administration Building, 101 Hooper Avenue, Toms River. The open house will offer residents an opportunity to see and ask questions about the design plans for new inspection center, which will be located at Route 70 and Dover Pines Avenue.
As part of the New Jersey’s new enhanced vehicle inspection and maintenance program, Toms River’s new inspection station will have six lanes, up from the two lanes at the present facility. Unlike the existing facility where NJDOT vehicle repairs are performed, the new site will function only as an inspection station.
"Because of the increase in population in Toms River and neighboring communities, the existing Toms River inspection station can no longer handle inspection traffic in a way that is most efficient and convenient for motorists," said Carl Passeri, Executive Director of the State’s Clean Air Program.
"This new site was chosen after years of careful study, considering traffic flow, accessibility and safety, as well as economic factors affecting the town. The site at Route 70 offers better access to motorists, it is close to the original site and is on property already owned by the NJDOT. We did not want to take any property away from Toms River, its residents or businesses," said Passeri.
Parsons Infrastructure and Technology Group, a division of Pasadena, California-based Parsons Inc., was awarded the contract to operate New Jersey’s vehicle inspection stations by the state. The contract calls for Parsons to institute a new emissions testing procedure to help bring the state into compliance with the Federal Clean Air Act of 1990. Statewide installation of the new emissions testing equipment at state and private inspection facilities is scheduled to be completed by December 1999.
New Jersey is one of 28 states either operating or implementing an enhanced emissions inspection program.
