Resurfacing project to start on
Route 24; delays and lane closures to occur

The New Jersey Department of Transportation will begin a project to rehabilitate and resurface Route 24 on Friday evening, June 18, 1999, in the communities of Millburn and Summit. The 2.2 mile project runs from the NJ TRANSIT’s Morris and Essex Line bridge to the John F. Kennedy Parkway.

The project will rehabilitate the existing reinforced concrete pavement and will resurface the roadway with a special asphalt material called Novachip, which absorbs sound and helps to make the roadway quieter. The Department developed this project in response to requests from state legislators, local officials, and area residents.

Because the Novachip material is temperature sensitive, it must be put down during the warm weather months. Substantial completion of the project is scheduled for mid-September, 1999. In order to complete this work on schedule, lane and ramp closures, reduction of the number of travel lanes, and diversion of traffic to Route 124, will occur. Motorists can expect congestion and delays to occur periodically during the course of this project.

The $3.4 million project will be done by Della Pello Contracting, Incorporated, of Union, NJ. The project is funded entirely through the state Transportation Trust Fund. Commuters can get updates on lane closures by visiting NJDOT’s website at https://nj-dot.nj.gov/transportation/commuter/.
