NJ Gov. Signs Emergency
Regulations Directing Large Interstate Trucks off
State
and Local Roads and on to National Network
Governor Christie Whitman today signed emergency regulations that prohibit large interstate trucks from using state and county roadways as through routes or short cuts between National Network highways. The regulations go into effect immediately.
"Today we move forward on ensuring that large interstate trucks use the National Network of highways that we have provided for them," Gov. Whitman said. "I have directed the NJ Department of Transportation to begin installing new signs advising of these regulations as soon as possible.
"There is simply no reason that a large interstate truck that is not making a pick-up or delivery in New Jersey should use a small or inappropriate highway in the Garden State. The National Network was delineated to accommodate these large interstate trucks and the National Network is where those trucks should travel," she said.
Under the new regulations, large interstate trucks that are not making deliveries in New Jersey will be directed to use highways that are a part of the National Network. The National Network is a system of highways specifically identified as appropriate for use by large interstate trucks. The National Network is primarily comprised of interstate highways.
While interstate trucks will be prohibited from using roads that are not a part of the National Network, nothing in the new regulations will prohibit trucks that are making deliveries on non- network highways from using those roads for delivery or other commercial purposes.
