Governor to Declare Hurricane State of Emergency

Gov. Christie Whitman is declaring a state of emergency today in anticipation of Hurricane Floyd. The state of emergency will empower the state to take appropriate steps in anticipation of the storm. Among those steps are the deployment of National Guard personnel and equipment, NJ State Police and Department of Transportation personnel and equipment.
There is a high likelihood that the Governor will order the closing of New Jersey's schools. A decision of school closings will be made by 6:00 a.m. tomorrow.
Gov. Whitman will be available to the media to discuss the declaration at 3:30 p.m. at the Bilingual Daycare Center, 225 West Second Street, Plainfield.
*Directions: NJ Turnpike to exit for 287. Take 287 North to Stelton Road exit. Travel on Stelton Road to New Brunswick Avenue. Turn right off Stelton Road onto New Brunswick Avenue. At the end of New Brunswick Ave. turn right onto West Seventh Street. Turn left onto Central Avenue. At third light, past fire station, turn right onto West Second Street. Center will be ahead one block.
