Improvements on U.S. Route 322;
Emphasizes State's Commitment to Improving Road System
Governor Christie Whitman visited Muhlbaier's Curve on U.S. Route 322 in Logan Township to underscore her pledge in making New Jersey roads safer for motorists.
Addressing state and local officials, and construction workers, Gov. Whitman pointed out that this mile-long stretch along U.S. Route 322, known as Muhlbaier's Curve, has taken the lives of five New Jerseyans, and has been the site of almost 140 accidents since 1991.
"Over the years, the warning signs, markers and lowered speed limits reduced the danger here, but those measures haven't been enough," said Gov. Whitman. "Growth and development in this area has made what was once just a sharp curve into an unacceptable traffic nightmare.
"So now we will fix Muhlbaier's Curve," pledged the Governor. "The construction workers here today will work their magic on this mile-long stretch of Route 322. By December, they will eliminate the curve, install signals, improve the drainage and relocate utilities."
The Department of Transportation is fully funding these improvements at a cost of about $3 million. The project, which began last month, involves the realignment of the roadway and will make the roadway safe for a speed of 60 miles per hour. While reduced speed limits, a variety of advanced warning signs and raised pavement markers had improved the situation, the dangerous curvature wasn't eliminated - a situation which will now be addressed.
