Motor Vehicle extends inspection station hours
Yesterday, Governor Whitman directed me to take immediate steps to address problems with the new inspection system. Foremost of these problems is reducing the length of the lines at our inspection stations. In response to the Governor’s directive, we are taking three steps to ensure that our contractor, Parsons Infrastructure, makes improvements to the current system:
We are making official the extended morning hours, opening all stations at 6:30 a.m. rather than 7:30.
We are directing Parsons to adjust staffing levels at inspection sites in order to maximize lane productivity and avoid lane shutdowns.
On Friday, we will look at the first four days of operation, identify which stations have excessive wait times, and direct Parsons to address those wait time through either extended hours, increased staffing, additional resources or other measures.
Parsons has agreed that current wait times and system errors must be rectified as soon as possible. We appreciate Parsons’ cooperation, and acknowledge their effort to get this new and complex inspection system up and running by the EPA’s December 13, deadline.
However, our goal has always been to deliver an efficient, customer-friendly inspection system for motorists which also meets our clean air objectives. That continues to be our goal, and we will accept nothing less.
