Traffic shifts to occur in Clifton as
part of the Route 21 Freeway construction

The New Jersey Department of Transportation today announced that traffic changes will take place as part of the construction for the Route 21 Freeway project in Clifton, Passaic County.

On or about April 12, 2000, Route 46 eastbound traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed roadway throughout the project. Route 46 westbound traffic will remain in its current location.

In addition, on or about April 12, 2000, Route 46 eastbound traffic will be reduced to from two lanes to one lane between Lakeview Avenue and the Garden State Parkway overpass for a period of sixty days.

These changes are being undertaken so that retaining walls and other road work in the median between eastbound and westbound traffic can be completed. The lane width for Route 46 eastbound will only be 12 feet wide, requiring a Wide Load restriction.

The $136 million project will construct a 1.8 mile missing link of the Route 21 Freeway in Clifton and Passaic. The project is scheduled to be opened to traffic by December of 2000.
