Gimello Named Executive
Director of Maritime Resources
Commissioner James Weinstein today announced the appointment of Richard J. Gimello as Executive Director of New Jersey Maritime Resources within the New Jersey Department of Transportation.
Gimello most recently served as Assistant Commissioner for Site Remediation in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. He succeeds Frank M. McDonough, who recently retired.
Gimello will be responsible for overseeing the state's marine transportation system, including efforts to dredge the Port Newark/Elizabeth area, Delaware River ports and the management of dredge materials, Weinstein said.
A significant portion of materials that need to be dredged require creative consensus-based management solutions. Rick brings a wealth of experience in this regard having managed a number of critical statewide public policy issues. Rick has over his public career gained the respect of both the business and environmental communities," Weinstein said.
"Governor Whitman has made clear that dredging is crucial not just for healthy port commerce, but also for robust tourism, fishing and recreational boating opportunities that require clean and navigable waters. Ultimately, a sound environment and sound marine transportation system are key to long term economic prosperity," Weinstein added.
Earlier this year, New Jersey Maritime Resources was transferred into the NJDOT from the Commerce and Economic Development Commission. New Jersey Maritime Resources was established by Gov. Whitman in 1995 to provide interagency support, programmatic planning and policy recommendations in support of the state's $50 billion maritime industry.
