Proposes to Readopt and Amend
the State Highway Access Management Code

The Access Code sets standards for driveways and other means of physical access to and from State highways, and establishes an access level for each segment of State highway. The access levels set in the regulations help to preserve the capacity of the State highway system and mobility in highway transportation corridors.

Proposed amendments reflect the Department's continuing review of the Access Code to ensure that access levels for each segment of State highway are appropriate to the character of the surrounding community. The Department also proposes to amend the Access Code to standardize requirements for State and non-State highway approaches to signalized intersections. These actions would enhance the free movement of vehicles on State highways.

The rules proposed for readoption and the proposed amendments have been published in the New Jersey Register. The public has until August 17, 2001 to comment on the proposal.

The Department has scheduled an informal informational workshop to afford interested parties the opportunity to informally ask questions about the proposal. Those planning to attend the workshop are asked to telephone the Department at (609) 530-2038 at least two working days in advance. The informational workshop will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2001, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, NJ Department of Transportation Main Office Building, 1035 Parkway Avenue, Ewing Township, New Jersey.
