Commuters can continue parking at Willowbrook
Mall while alternative arrangements are finalized
Transportation Commissioner James P. Fox today announced the New Jersey Department of Transportation has reached an agreement with the owners of the Willowbrook Mall that will allow existing commuters to continue using the site until alternative parking is provided.
“Cooperation and decisive action will mean park and ride users can continue to have a safe and secure area accessible to public transit for parking,” Commissioner Fox said. “The rapid-response efforts of the McGreevey administration will ensure these commuters are not stranded by inaction.”
“The Department is very close to reaching a long-term, readily accessible solution with a nearby property owner,” said Fox. ”In the meantime, however, cars will not be towed.”
“It is already difficult enough for commuters to get into New York City without having to worry about the loss of dependable and safe parking,” said Fox.
The agreement with the Willowbrook Mall is as follows: on March 18, 2002, 1,600 parking spaces will be available at the mall in three designated areas. On or before April 8, 2002, the NJDOT will provide alternative parking for 400 cars in the vicinity of the Mall. When that is available, parking at the mall will be reduced by 400 spaces. Bus service will be provided at the new site.
On or before May 6, the NJDOT will provide parking for another 400 cars in the vicinity of the mall. Park and Ride customers will be restricted to parking only within the 802 parking spaces designated for commuter parking at the mall.
“Commuters can be assured that the Department is working closely with Wayne officials to pursue a long-term solution for Willowbrook commuters,” Fox said. “Regular updates will be provided to commuters.
“The owners of the Willowbrook Mall and Wayne Mayor Scott Rumana should also be congratulated for helping to address this situation in a reasonable and fair fashion.”
