Fox announces additional
commmuting options for Holland Tunnel commuters
Evaluates Scene with Mayor and State Police
To assist commuters who normally travel through the Holland Tunnel, Transportation Commissioner James P. Fox, acting on the direction of Gov. James E. McGreevey, activated every available transit option this morning to ease congestion caused by the fire that has closed traffic lanes from New Jersey into Manhattan.
Fox, who is also chairman of the NJ Transit Board of Directors, joined State Police officials and Jersey City Mayor Glenn Cunningham at the scene of the fire this morning. Fox assured commuters that all available transportation resources are being fully utilized to ease their difficulties.
“Every single piece of transit equipment is out on the street to help commuters,” said Fox. “Governor McGreevey and I are committed to assisting commuters who normally travel through the Holland Tunnel by increasing commuting options.”
Fox announced that New Jersey Transit will accept NJ Transit passes on its Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service and provide free parking at the West Side Avenue Station parking facility in Jersey City.
“By waiving parking fees at the West Side Avenue Station in Jersey City and cross honoring bus and rail passes on the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail system, we can help address the difficulties our Holland Tunnel commuters are currently facing,” said Fox.
Fox said New Jersey Transit will continue to cross honor bus and rail passes on its trains and buses until the tunnel reopens, and encourages customers to take Hoboken-bound trains – including the Waterfront Connection service from Newark Penn Station – where ferry service to lower Manhattan is available. New York Waterway is offering free ferry service from Hoboken Terminal to lower and midtown Manhattan this week.
New Jersey Transit’s Hudson-Bergen Light Rail service operates from 34th Street in Bayonne to Newport Station in Jersey City and from West Side Avenue Station in Jersey City to Newport Station. At Newport Station, customers can connect to PATH service to 33rd Street.
To get to West Side Avenue, take the New Jersey Turnpike to exit 15E, and follow signs to Routes 1 & 9 North. After passing Route 440, turn right at the second light for West Side Avenue and follow signs to the station.
