Public invited to meeting on
solution to improve 295/76/42 interchange
The New Jersey Department of Transportation is holding an initial public meeting on proposed improvements to the I-295/I-76/Route 42 Interchange on Wednesday, April 24. The meeting will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Bellmawr Ballroom, 29 Lewis Avenue, Bellmawr, NJ.
Currently, the existing interchange does not provide a direct connection to I-295. The existing configuration requires motorists to reduce speed in both the north and southbound directions of I-295 in order to negotiate ramps with posted speeds of 35 mph. I-295 motorists are also required to weave with traffic from Route 42 and I-76.
This project will consider a new alignment to carry I-295 through the interchange in order to improve safety and reduce congestion, while improving quality of life and protecting the environment.
"The Department will work diligently with local governments to develop a project that improves the flow of traffic in the area and addresses the concerns of the community," said Transportation Commissioner James P. Fox said. "We feel it is crucial for a project of this magnitude to solicit input from the community at the very outset."
More than 225,000 vehicles use the interchange daily and is one of the busiest interchanges in southern New Jersey. The project affect traffic from Atlantic City to Cape May to Vineland. It will also affect residents living near the interchange.
"I want to encourage residents, elected officials, local organizations and commuters who either live here or travel through on a daily basis to come to this meeting and give us your suggestions for the realignment," Commissioner Fox continued.
