Ground broken for Route
31 and 579 intersection project
Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox today joined state and local officials to break ground for the Route 31 and 579 intersection project in West Amwell Township.
“Route 31 is one of the busiest highways in New Jersey,” Commissioner Fox said, “and this important project will go a long way to improving safety. Motorists who use this roadway every day know that having turning lanes at this intersection will provide a new level of safety that is critically-needed.”
“In order to expedite this project, we used one hundred percent state Transportation Trust Fund money. Having a stable source of funding like the Trust Fund has benefited New Jersey for the past eighteen years, and this project is only one example.”
The project will add a right turning lane on Route 31 southbound; a left turning lane on Route 31 northbound; and a 1,000 foot center turning lane on Route 31 just south of the intersection. In addition, the roadway approaching the intersection from the south will be flattened out to improve the sight-distance for motorists heading north on Route 31.
The Crisdel Group of South Plainfield, NJ was awarded the $2.9 million construction contract for the project. Work is expected to be completed by early spring, 2003.
