Legreide sworn in as DMV Director, by predecessor
In a brief ceremony in the Mercer County Courthouse, Diane Legreide was sworn in today as Director of Motor Vehicles. She was sworn in by Superior Court Justice June Strelecki. Judge Strelecki held the DMV position from 1964 to 1970 and was the first woman in the nation to do so.
“Congratulations. You’ve been appointed to a tough job,” Judge Strelecki said when introduced to Legreide.
Legreide, the 20th person to be DMV director since 1906, is the third woman to hold that position (Joan Wiskowski was DMV director from 1980 to 1982). As Director of Motor Vehicles, she will manage more than 1,200 employees, 45 motor vehicle agencies and 32 state inspection stations, and oversee the state's 1,400 private inspection facilities.
Legreide served on the Casino Control Commission from 1994 until she took her current post. From 1986 to 1994, Legreide was Deputy Executive Director of the State Senate Democratic Caucus. She staffed the Senate's Transportation Committee, as well as its Coastal Resources Committee. Previously, Legreide was executive director of L.E.G.A.L., an organization representing lawyers.
