Announces Commuter Parking Expansion
Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox joined state and local officials today to cut the ribbon for the Howard Boulevard park and ride lot in Mount Arlington, Morris County, NJ.
“Adding park and ride lots has been a top priority for this administration,” Commissioner Fox said. “We know that commuters depend more than ever on adequate and safe parking. It’s already tough enough just getting into Manhattan, so the last thing commuters should have to worry about is parking.
We have a responsibility to make sure that such facilities are available. The Howard Boulevard park and ride will give commuters a little more breathing room when it comes to finding parking spaces.”
The Howard Boulevard park and ride lot has 235 parking spaces for I-80 commuters. The $2.3 million project was started in July of 2001. The project is an important component of NJDOT’s efforts to provide more parking facilities for commuters using the east-west highway corridors in northern New Jersey.
“Our efforts in this area do not end with this project. We are advancing a new rail station for this location that will include a 500 space parking lot. Construction is several years away, but NJDOT and NJ TRANSIT are working together to advance this project,” Commissioner Fox said.
NJDOT’s park and ride efforts in the Morris County area include resurfacing and landscaping for the Beverwyck Road park and ride lot, leasing the Arlington Shopping Plaza for parking spots, and advancing construction of a new park and ride facility at Route 46 and Waterview Boulevard. All three locations are in Parsippany. In addition, NJDOT is working with NJ TRANSIT and other state agencies to advance a new transit village near the Morristown Train Station that will include 117 new parking spots for commuters.
The Howard Boulevard park and ride lot is served by the Lakeland Bus Company. Funding for park and ride construction is funded through the New Jersey Transportation Trust Fund. Since the events of September 11, 2001, greater demand has been placed upon facilities that allow commuters to use public transit to reach Manhattan. NJDOT is currently advancing 11 other park and ride, and rail parking projects, in addition to Howard Boulevard, which will add over 4,000 parking spaces statewide.
