Fox to join local officials to cut
ribbon for new Ocean City-Longport bridge
Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox will join state, federal, county and local officials tomorrow to cut the ribbon for the new Ocean City-Longport bridge in Ocean City.
The ribboncutting will be held at the foot of the new bridge on the Ocean City side on Friday, July 19, 2002, at 3:00 p.m.
The new $55 million bridge extends from the Garden State Parkway to Route 152 and replaces the 75 year old Ocean City-Longport bridge that had been closed to traffic for safety reasons since June of 2001.
The project began in 2000, with the new bridge constructed adjacent to the existing one. Approximately 10,000 motorists a day will use the bridge during the summer.
Antique vehicles will be the first ones to cross the new bridge, including a 1927 Buick that is owned by the family of Herbert Godfrey, who was one of the first people to cross the original bridge in 1927.
