progress of Route 1/130 improvement project

(Woodbridge) - “Celebrating New Jersey” for the fourth day this week, Governor James E. McGreevey today visited Middlesex County to eat breakfast at Woodbridge’s Reo Diner and to view the progress of the Route 1/130 improvement project extension in North Brunswick.

“MEET ME AT THE REO” IN WOODBRIDGE

The Governor started off his day with breakfast at the Reo Diner, located on Main Street and Amboy Avenue in Woodbridge. The Reo Diner was awarded the 1998 and 2000 Readers’ Choice Award for Best Diner in Central Jersey.

“During my tenure as Mayor of Woodbridge, I told many people, many times to ‘Meet me at the Reo,’” said McGreevey. “Despite all of the fine dining that Princeton has to offer, one of the things I miss the most about living and working in Woodbridge Township is getting to see long-time friends at the Reo.”

HIGHLIGHTS CONSTRUCTION AT ROUTES 1 AND 130

The Governor joined Department of Transportation representatives at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 130 to see the bright future ahead for North Brunswick residents and the 130,000 drivers who use this interchange on a daily basis. The $53 million construction project is slated to enable traffic to flow freely on and around Routes 1 and 130. The State is providing $21 million in FY 2003 towards this project.

Due to severe congestion and a high rate of accidents the project replaces intersection traffic signals and an outdated traffic circle with a four new bridges, enhanced traffic signals, and improved roadways.

“The expansion of Route 1 and 130 interchange project is vital for the area,” said McGreevey. “This project will improve mobility, relieve congestion and address quality of life issues that have plagued both commuters and residents along Georges Road.”

"Route 1 and 130 is one of the busiest intersections in the state. It is also outdated and overwhelmed. Our project will provide better traffic flow, easier access, and, most importantly, safety," said Commissioner James Fox.

The project will be completed in November 2003.

“Celebrate New Jersey” is a 10-day tour throughout the State during which the Governor will celebrate New Jersey’s unique culture and heritage, while continuing to advance his Administration’s commitment to investing in New Jersey’s future through educational and economic development initiatives. “Celebrate New Jersey” will run through Wednesday, July 31st and will include stops in all 21 counties.

Tomorrow, the Governor will Celebrate New Jersey in Somerset and Mercer Counties.
