Height clearance on Shark River Bridge
limited to 50 feet beginning November 4, 2002
With the last of the beam setting near completion, boaters using the South Channel of the Shark River bridge are advised that the height clearance will be 50 feet beginning on November 4, 2002.
"The Department remains committed to seeing that the remaining beams are installed with minimal inconvenience to both the motoring public and the boating community," Transportation Commissioner Jamie Fox said. "We will continue to work closely with the Coast Guard and local officials on this important project."
Work continues on the existing Route 35 movable bridge over the Shark River, which has an antiquated draw mechanism that causes congestion and delays when opened for river traffic. By the end of this week, fourteen beams will have been placed. Seven more beams will be installed, weather permitting, by November 4, 2002.
The new bridges over the Shark River will allow for smooth, continuous movement of traffic in and out of the area. One bridge will carry northbound traffic, the other will carry southbound vehicles.
