Governor McGreevey to host
First Annual Transportation Conference

(Trenton) – Governor James E. McGreevey and Acting Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere will host New Jersey’s First Annual Transportation Conference on Tuesday, January 7 at 8:00 am at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick. Governor McGreevey will give the keynote address and Steve Adubato Jr. will moderate panel discussions.

The Department of Transportation, in conjunction with New Jersey Alliance for Action will bring together leaders from public agencies, transportation advocacy groups, transportation consumers and members of the state’s economic community to discuss transportation policy in New Jersey. Participants include New Jersey Transit the NJ Turnpike Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and state and federal legislators.

The goal of this conference is to raise awareness of the issues facing New Jersey with respect to funding the transportation system. The State Transportation Trust Fund is the main funding source for transportation improvements within New Jersey. The state also receives a significant amount of funding each year from the federal transportation investment bill. This bill, the Transportation Enhancement Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21) was authorized in 1996. Its authorization expires next year. This conference will serve as the kickoff to the campaign to reauthorize these two laws that New Jersey depends on for over $2.5 billion annually in transportation funding.

Panel discussion topics include The Dilemma of the State’s Growth and Maturing Infrastructure –The public’s transportation needs; Keeping New Jersey’s Economy Moving - Transportation infrastructure and its contribution to the economy and Addressing the State’s Transportation Challenges and Marshalling the Resources –The public’s representatives working to keep New Jersey on the move.
