State engineers group honors Lettiere
(Trenton) - Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere has achieved another first -- the Consulting Engineers Council of New Jersey (CECNJ) has honored him as the first state transportation commissioner to win its Distinguished Service Award.
Meeting at Rutgers University last night for its annual Engineering Excellence Awards Banquet, the CECNJ presented Lettiere with the award, which honors an individual the group feels has contributed the most to the betterment of society and the citizens of New Jersey. A 29-year career employee of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Lettiere is the first commissioner to win the CECNJ award.
“The CECNJ is extremely pleased to present our highest award to a career DOT employee who has served the citizens of New Jersey through his entire career,” said Steve Boswell, a member of CECNJ’s board of directors.
“I am gratified to receive this recognition which is a result of Governor McGreevey’s willingness to reach into the ranks of the DOT in naming me commissioner,” said Lettiere.
The first DOT career employee to be appointed commissioner, Lettiere has advanced many of Governor McGreevey’s transportation initiatives, such as the proposed consolidation of the New Jersey Turnpike and the New Jersey Highway Authority, reform efforts underway at the Motor Vehicles Commission, and a $2.6 billion capital program that supports Smart Growth development.
Lettiere was appointed Deputy Commissioner in February 2002. He previously served as Assistant Commissioner for Capital Investment and has managed the Department’s $2.6 billion Capital Program since 1993.
Lettiere is a member of the national work group that is developing the framework for the reauthorization of the federal transportation act. He also has instituted numerous innovative financing techniques for complex transportation projects and chairs the nationally recognized Local Bridge Initiative Group.
The commissioner is a graduate of the General Motors Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He has a Masters of Business Administration from Rider University.
