NJDOT "Reach the Beach" program
Suspends Construction for Holiday Weekend

"New Jersey is a wonderful place to vacation and we will do everything we can to help motorists get to their destinations safely and quickly," Commissioner Lettiere said. "Beginning at Noon, Friday, May 23, all construction work that affects travel lanes on our highways will be suspended through Noon, Tuesday, May 27. Lane closures will be permitted for emergency reasons only."

In North Jersey, on I-287, I-80, I-78, I-280, and NJ 440, Emergency Service Patrols (ESP) will operate Friday evening, May 23, until 8:30 p.m., and Sunday, May 25, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm. In South Jersey, on I-95, I-195, I-295, NJ 29, I-76/676, Route 42 and Route 55, ESP will operate Friday evening, May 23, until 8:30 p.m., and 7:00 am to 7:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday, May 24 and 25. Normal ESP hours are 4:00 am to 8:30 pm, Monday through Friday.

In addition, The Traffic Operations Centers will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to monitor shore bound traffic routes. These routes are: Route 37 in Ocean County, Route 73 in Burlington and Camden Counties, I-76 and Route 42 in Camden County, and Route 55 and 47 in Cumberland and Cape May Counties.

For the third consecutive year, NJDOT is kicking off its "Reach the Beach" effort to improve traffic flow and safety on Routes 47 and 55 during the summer months.

"On weekends throughout the spring and summer, traffic is congested on the shoreline corridors," Commissioner Lettiere said. "Our Reach the Beach effort will again be able to assist motorists by informing them of delays and advising them of other routes to take."

The project utilizes smart highway technology to monitor traffic conditions and inform motorists of delays and other routes to travel. It consists of:

-- Variable Message Sign located on Route 55 southbound just prior to the exit for Route 40 in Franklin Township, Gloucester County.

-- Variable Message Sign on Route 55 southbound just prior to the exit for Route 49 in Millville City, Cumberland County.

-- Closed-circuit television cameras located along routes 55, 47 and 347 that are linked to NJDOT Traffic Operations Center in Cherry Hill.
