Lettiere hosts municipal,
county officials at NJDOT workshop

Leaders gain valuable insight into transportation issues

(Trenton) - State Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere today welcomed county and municipal leaders from Burlington, Hunterdon and Mercer Counties to NJDOT Headquarters for a workshop covering a variety of transportation topics important to local officials.

The five-hour workshop, a first for NJDOT, offered participants the opportunity to gain first-hand knowledge on issues important to the growth and success of their communities including local aid grant programs, capital improvements, traffic safety, roadway maintenance and public transportation.

“This is the type of program that truly strengthens our partnership with local government,” said Lettiere. “The local leaders can take the information they’ve learned and use it to guide their communities in a positive direction and improve the quality of life for all residents.”

Presentations by representatives of various NJDOT divisions highlighted topics ranging from the approval process for access permits and intersection improvements; competitive grant programs for bikeways, pedestrian safety and streetscape enhancements; road repair and reconstruction; and mass transit improvements – all critical issues for governing bodies.

In addition to the presentations, participants were able to network with NJDOT and NJ Transit professionals and receive a resource packet that provides detailed contact information and a breakdown of divisions within the department.

“From planning and zoning boards to the offices of county engineers and municipal managers, these are the practical issues that matter in our communities. Local and county government can only benefit from a better understanding of how our department operates,” added Lettiere.

Today’s workshop is the first in a series that will be held in the coming months for all of New Jersey’s 21 counties.
