NJDOT funding to provide for
safer streets in Fair Lawn

Funds help accomplish goals while providing valuable property tax relief

(TRENTON)— State Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere today announced that the Borough of Fair Lawn in Bergen County will receive $50,000 in funding to make local streets safer for borough residents.
Funded through the Transportation Trust Fund, the grant will allow local officials to complete a variety of improvements and traffic calming measures on Arcadia, Berkshire, Cambridge, Dorchester and Ellington Roads located between Plaza Road and Midland Avenue. Improvements will also be done on Plaza Road between Ellington Road and the Saddle Brook border.
“Whether its creating new jobs, stopping sprawl or fixing our roads, we are making sure that New Jerseyans have the quality of life they deserve,” said Lettiere. “These types of projects translate into safer local streets, a smoother ride through our neighborhoods and downtowns and financial relief to our communities. This money will go a long way in helping Mayor Ganz and his colleagues continue to improve safety for the families of Fair Lawn.”
The New Jersey Department of Transportation is committed to advancing projects that enhance safety, renew the aging infrastructure and support new transportation opportunities. The Division of Local Aid and Economic Development works with county and municipal government officials to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the state’s transportation system. Through the Transportation Trust Fund and the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), local governments have the opportunity to receive funding assistance for road, bridge and other transportation projects that might otherwise be funded with local taxpayer dollars.

"This grant is an investment that will prevent accidents and keep the children of Fair Lawn safe, while also providing valuable property tax relief," said State Senator Joseph Coniglio. "This further demonstrates our ongoing efforts to secure vital state financing to improve the quality of life in the communities we represent. This money will pay dividends for years to come."
In addition to this award, Fair Lawn has also received $50,000 through the FY2004 Municipal Aid program and $50,000 through the FY2004 Safe Streets to Schools program. Last month, Lettiere provided Bergen County Executive Dennis McNerney with a check for $7.1 million to fund various county projects – the largest grant awarded in FY2004 through the NJDOT County Aid Program.
To date, nearly $150 million in funding has been awarded to communities throughout the state through the NJDOT Division of Local Aid and Economic Development.
