NJDOT kicks off Local Bike and Pedestrian
Study in Montclair
(MONTCLAIR) State Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere announced the start this week of a cooperative effort between the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) and the Township of Montclair to establish a network of bicycle and pedestrian amenities throughout the township.
Through the NJDOT Office Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs, Montclair will receive up to $75,000 in federal funding to study to identify and recommend ways to implement a bicycle network on local streets; to design and establish a "Green Corridor" between parks and to include a sidewalk inventory, mark walking and biking routes and expand public outreach; and to identify areas for public bike racks near public transit stops and school sites for commuters and students.
"The funding for Montclair's study is yet another step in Governor McGreevey's vision for Smart Growth in New Jersey," said Lettiere. "By connecting neighborhoods and communities with a network for bike and pedestrian accommodations, we're giving the Township's residents an alternative means of transportation and an opportunity for recreation with their families."
The study, which will last approximately six to eight months, will be conducted as a collaborative effort between Montclair officials and residents, NJDOT and representatives of Bike Montclair, an advocacy organization within the township.
"This is a very important step in making our communities more viable and encouraging recreation and family activities for our residents," said State Senator Nia Gill.
