NJDOT prepares for July 4th Weekend

Trenton - NJDOT Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere highlighted the Department's “Reach the Beach” program that will keep all state roadways open through the entire July 4 th Holiday weekend, and other statewide initiatives designed to ensure the safety of all motorists in New Jersey this summer.(See initiatives)

Beginning at 6 am, Friday, July 2nd, all construction work that affects travel lanes on New Jersey's highways will be suspended through Noon, Tuesday, July 6th. Lane closures will be permitted for emergencies only.

The NJDOT's “Reach the Beach” effort will improve traffic flow and safety on highways during the summer months. The project utilizes smart highway technology to monitor traffic conditions and inform motorists of delays and other routes to travel.

The NJDOT expects Friday July 2 nd to be the most heavily traveled day of the Holiday weekend, with volume expected to be at it's highest between the hours of 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. The concentration of this traffic will be experienced at Interchanges 1, 13 and 13A, the I-95 extension, portions of the westerly roadway, and just south of 8A at the merge.

“Safety is always our top priority, and we're doing everything we can to make sure families get to their destinations safely during this holiday weekend,” said Lettiere, “Our Emergency Service Patrols will be working expanded hours throughout the state to assist disabled motorists, and we're also keeping the roadways clear of construction to ensure an open road and prevent driver distractions.”

Emergency Service Patrol (ESP) will be active thru out the state during the Holiday weekend. In Central and South Jersey, on all or portions of I-95, I-195, I-295, I-76/676, Route 29 Tunnel, Route 42 and Route 55, ESP will operate Friday evening, July 2nd until 10:30 p.m., Saturday, July 3rd, from 7:00 am to 10:30 pm, Sunday, July 4th from 7:00 am to 10:30 pm, and Monday, July 5th, from noon to 8:30 10:30 pm.

In North Jersey, on all or portions of I-287, I-80, I-78, Route 440 and I-280 ESP will operate Friday evening July 2nd until 10:30 p.m., Sunday, July 4th, from 11:00 am to 8:30 pm. and Monday July 5th, from Noon to 8:30 p.m.

“Our goal is to give motorists the smoothest trip possible to their shore destinations this weekend.” the Commissioner said.
