NJDOT announces $ 2.1 million in grants
to municipalities for non-traditional transportation projects.
(Trenton)
New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Jack
Lettiere recently announced the award of $ 2.1 million in grants
for local transportation improvement projects throughout the state.
The funds are being allocated through NJDOT’s FY2005 Centers
of Place program.
Centers of Place grants are awarded for non-traditional transportation
projects that advance the development agenda in only those municipalities
designated by the State Planning Commission as “urban, regional,
town or village centers” under the State Development and
Redevelopment Plan.
“This program is an excellent opportunity for towns to use
state funding to advance projects that are outside the traditional
concept of a transportation project, such as the beautification
of downtown business areas or restoration of historic structures—without
placing the financial burden on the local property taxpayer,”
stated Acting Governor Richard J. Codey.
“Centers of Place grants help revitalize communities and
help municipalities create a central identity,” noted Lettiere.
“This program is another example of the Department’s
commitment to partnering with towns to improve quality of life
for their residents.”
The Centers of Place program is designed to assist municipalities
who have formally participated in implementation of the New Jersey
State Development and Redevelopment Plan. Centers of Place grants
often fund improvements in downtown business districts, helping
to make municipalities improve their profile for attracting business
growth. Funding for Centers of Place applications require the
approval of the Commissioner of Transportation and the program
is paid for with dollars from the state’s Transportation
Trust Fund.
