Codey, Lettiere praise new Federal Transportation funding bill

(Trenton) - Acting Governor Richard J. Codey today praised New Jersey's Congressional delegation for its work on a federal transportation funding bill that would increase funding to the Garden State by at least 30 percent.

"New Jersey's highways are among the most heavily traveled in the nation," Codey said. "I commend the members of our Congressional delegation for their hard work in providing this federal help."

SAFETEA-LU, known as the "Safe, Accountable, Flexible and Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2005, a Legacy for Users," would increase New Jersey's federal funding for road and mass transit projects. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill today, and passage in the U.S. Senate appears imminent.

"We are extremely excited and relieved that Congress has acted," Transportation Commissioner Jack Lettiere said. "Now, with certainty of increased federal funding, we can go about our business and make improvements to our transportation infrastructure that will reduce congestion, promote the
use of mass transit and, most importantly, save lives."
