NJDOT to
break ground on Route 280 Hyperbuild Project in Roseland
NJDOT
to replace bridge in only 3 weeks
(Trenton)-Commissioner
Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of
Transportation (NJDOT) on April 28 will begin its replacement
of the Route 280 Eastbound Bridge located
from mileposts 3.37-4.71 over
the Morristown-Erie Railroad in Roseland, Essex County.
NJDOT will replace the bridge, which is structurally deficient,
within three weeks.
"Under
the Hyperbuild
initiative, NJDOT uses innovative design and construction techniques
in order to minimize project costs and inconvenience to motorists,"
said Commissioner Kolluri. "In this instance, NJDOT designed the
replacement bridge in-house and fabricated the bridge decks off-site
in order to accelerate the delivery of the project."
NJDOT
will replace the bridge's deck and beams in only three weeks by
implementing Hyperbuild techniques. NJDOT's contractor, Union
Paving & Construction, will fabricate
the deck panels and store them offsite until they are installed.
NJDOT successfully used a similar method to replace bridge decks
on Route 1 at Olden Avenue in Trenton and the Route 46 Overpeck
Creek Bridge in Ridgefield
Park
under an accelerated construction schedule.
NJDOT
also designed and contracted the $4
million, federally funded Route
280 Eastbound Bridge replacement project on an aggressive schedule.
The Department identified the existing bridge's structural deficiencies
during a routine, biannual i nspection
in May 2005, which determined that that 10 of the bridge's 12
beams had partially failed, resulting in a four-inch drop in the
deck on the western end of the structure. Within a week, NJDOT
performed emergency repairs to ensure the existing bridge's safety
and began designing a replacement bridge. NJDOT solicited bids
for the construction of the replacement bridge in early August
and awarded the contract in early October 2005.
The
Hyperbuild project strategy condenses the scoping, design, and
construction phases of a road project's development. NJDOT
implements new and innovative construction and design concepts
to streamline projects and accelerate their delivery.
In
order to complete this project quickly, NJDOT
will construct the new bridge by closing
all eastbound lanes and shifting traffic to the westbound lanes.
Temporary shifting of traffic and the temporary
closure of some travel lanes is required. These shifts
and closures are being strategically implemented to expedite the
project and minimize any inconvenience to motorists.
Starting
at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 28, NJDOT will make the following changes
to existing traffic patterns on Route 280 in Roseland in order
to accommodate the necessary construction:
- All
eastbound lanes will be diverted into the westbound lanes.
Two lanes will remain open in both directions at all times
between Exits 4 and 5.
- Eisenhower
Parkway northbound and southbound ramps to I-280 East will
be closed. Traffic will be detoured via I-280 West
to U-turn at Exit 1.
- I-280
East ramps to Eisenhower Parkway northbo und
and southbound will be closed. Traffic will be detoured
by continuing on I- 280 East to U-turn at Exit 5.
NJDOT
is undertaking an extensive public outreach effort to notify motorists
of upcoming temporary changes to traffic patterns. NJDOT
has placed variable message signs for motorists on westbound I-280
near Exit 6, on eastbound I-280 before Exit 1 and on Eisenhower
Parkway northbound and southbound.
In addition, NJDOT has posted directional signs throughout the
detour route to guide motorists.
