NJDOT announces additional lane closures on
Routes 23, 46 and I-80
(Trenton) The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced two upcoming lane closures that will enable NJDOT to widen and rebuild ramps and replace bridge decks on Routes 23, 46 and I-80 in Wayne, Passaic County.
In addition to the lane closures already in place, the NJDOT on Saturday May 6, 2006 will institute the following additional changes to the traffic pattern:

The Department of Transportation will close one of two lanes on the ramp that carries traffic from Route 23 southbound onto I-80 eastbound until September 6, 2007. The ramp will remain open and provide one lane of access to I-80 eastbound. Traffic heading southbound on Route 23 from points north of I-80 may experience major delays as motorists become familiar with the new traffic pattern. Motorists are urged to avoid this area by using either I-287 South to I-80 or I-287 North to Route 208 South to Route 4, 17 or the Garden State Parkway to I-80.

One of the two ramps from Route 46 Eastbound to Route 23 Northbound and I-80 Eastbound will be permanently closed. Motorists are advised to take the prior ramp (located approximately 1000 feet before the ramp that will be closed) which provides access to Route 23 Northbound and I-80 Eastbound. This ramp is closing to improve traffic flow along Route 23 Northbound by reducing the amount of traffic weaving associated with the double ramp layout. Long-term plans call for the ramp to be removed.
The $70 million Route 46/23/80 project addresses Route 46 from the Passaic River to Galesi Drive in Wayne. The project includes bridge deck replacement, realignment and resurfacing, ramp modification and the addition of signs, lighting, guide rails and acceleration and deceleration lanes. The Route 46/23/80 project is part of NJDOT’s $195.4 million initiative to improve safety on Route 46 from Clifton to Fairfield.
Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully to protect themselves and workers in the construction zone. Variable Message Signs will be in place to inform motorists of the changes in traffic pattern.
