NJDOT announces start of Route 78 resurfacing
Project will necessitate traffic pattern changes
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the start of
NJDOT’s $42 million resurfacing and pavement reconstruction on Route 78 in Union Township, Union County.
NJDOT is scheduled to begin the rehabilitation of Route I-78 July 28, 2006 and complete construction on in December 2007. The
existing roadway is seriously deteriorated and in need of a complete rehabilitation.
This Hyperbuild project will make significant safety and operational improvements resulting in a safer and smoother roadway. NJDOT
reduced construction time by one year and increased the life expectancy of the pavement by paving all of the roadway’s lanes
simultaneously. This paving method eliminates the formation of longitudinal cracks between lanes that commonly result from paving
each roadway lane individually.
The construction project will require the following changes to the existing traffic pattern, which will remain in effect through
December 2006:
- On Friday, July 28 at 7:00 p.m., the New Jersey Department of Transportation will close the express lanes in the eastbound
direction of I-78 between Route 24 (Exit 48) in Springfield Township and the entrance to the Garden State Parkway (Exit 52) in Union
Township, Union County. Although the express lanes will remain closed for the duration of the construction, existing traffic will be
maintained in the four local lanes. Both lanes of Route 24 eastbound feeding into I-78 eastbound will be open to traffic along with
the entrance and exit ramps from the Garden State Parkway.
- A crossover located at the eastern end of the project will enable local traffic to travel to the express roadway. This crossover
is located west of where I-78 picks up the Garden State Parkway traffic and will relieve pressure on the local roadway. Northbound
Garden State Parkway traffic with westbound destinations must negotiate a U-turn at the I-78 Hillside interchange.
- On Friday, August 4 at 9:00 p.m., NJDOT will close the express lanes in the westbound direction of I-78 between the Garden State
Parkway (Exit 52) in Union Township and Route 24 (Exit 48) in Springfield Township, Union County. The express lanes will remain
closed for the duration of the construction while existing traffic will be maintained in four local lanes. The entrance and exit
ramps from the Garden State Parkway onto I-78 westbound will be maintained. At the I-78/Route 24 split, two of the four westbound
lanes will continue on as westbound I-78 and two lanes will split onto westbound Route 24.
NJDOT has installed several Variable Messaging Signs (VMS) to alert motorists of upcoming changes to traffic patterns. Motorists are
encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website, www.njcommuter.com, for project updates.
