NJDOT begins Route 9/Tilton Road intersection improvements in Northfield

(Trenton) New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that utility relocation has begun on a traffic safety improvement project at the intersection of Route 9 and Tilton Road (CR-563) in Northfield Township, Atlantic County. Actual roadway reconstruction is expected to begin during the week of November 5, 2006.

“Improving this intersection will make Route 9 in Northfield Township safer,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “Safety is paramount to residents who travel this intersection on a daily basis, and we are pleased to have been able to work closely with Senator Gormley, Assemblymen Blee and Whelan and local officials to bring this important project to construction.”

The $6.9 million, federally funded project involves the widening of all four approaches at the intersection, which has one of the highest accident rates in Atlantic County. NJDOT contractor Agate Construction Corporation, Inc. will improve Route 9 by providing one shared through lane, one right turn lane and one exclusive left turn lane. Tilton Road will be upgraded in order to provide two through lanes and one exclusive right turn lane southbound and one shared through and right turn lane northbound. The project includes a new traffic signal, pedestrian and bicycle improvements and driveway realignments.

NJDOT is implementing two detours of less than one mile during construction. The first detour is scheduled to begin in mid-November 2006 and remain in place until March. The second detour is scheduled to take effect in March 2007 and remain in effect until the completion of the project in summer 2007.

The detours will be as follows:

• Detour 1: Traffic heading north on Route 9 will proceed onto Zion Road (CR- 615) and Tilton Road (CR-563) and back to Route 9 north. Traffic traveling south on Route 9 will not affected.

• Detour 2: Traffic heading south on Route 9 will proceed onto Jackson Avenue, Burton Avenue and Tilton Road (CR-563) and back to Route 9 south. Traffic heading north on Route 9 is not affected.

NJDOT has placed two variable messaging signs on Route 9 at each end of the project to inform motorists of the construction and detours.
