Route 46 lane to reopen at I-80 interchange in Wayne
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that bridge work has been completed on a portion of the I-80/46/23 interchange in Wayne, Passaic County, which will allow a previously closed lane of traffic on Route 46 to reopen.
“NJDOT is pleased that the bridge work has been completed on schedule and ahead of the holiday shopping season,” said NJDOT Commissioner Kris Kolluri. “This interchange is one of the busiest in the state, and having this lane in use on Route 46 will provide a smoother and safer merge onto Route 23 or I-80.”
The lane will reopen to traffic on Friday evening, November 17, 2006. Motorists on Route 46 westbound will have two lanes available to merge onto Route 23 northbound and I-80 westbound. One lane has been closed since the project began in August of 2005.
The $70 million Route 46/23/80 project upgrades Route 46 from the Passaic River to Galesi Drive in Wayne Township. The project includes bridge deck replacement, roadway realignment and resurfacing, ramp modifications, acceleration and deceleration lanes, and new signage, lighting and guiderail. This interchange is traversed by approximately 120,000 vehicles a day.
The project will be fully completed by May, 2008, and is part of NJDOT’s $195 million overall initiative to improve safety on Route 46 in Passaic County.
