NJDOT cross median accident prevention program advances

Department awards barrier contract for

Routes 24, 78, 80, 280 and 287

 (Trenton) Acting Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will install median barriers along 38,000 feet of Routes 24, 78, 80, 280 and 287 in Morris, Union, Warren, Sussex, Essex, Bergen, Hunterdon and Somerset counties. The installation of barriers at these locations will prevent cross-median collisions.

 

"Increasing safety on New Jersey's roadways is NJDOT's highest priority," said Acting Commissioner Kolluri. "The installation of these median barriers will help save lives by preventing head-on collisions on some of the state's busiest highways."  

 

NJDOT awarded Highway Safety Systems Inc. of Hammonton a $2,200,792 contract to install over 20,000 feet of new guiderail and replace 18,000 feet of existing guiderail.   The contractor will begin to install the barriers in April and complete the project by mid-July.

The NJDOT Cross Median Accident Prevention Program identifies locations where excessive numbers of cross-median head-on collisions have occurred. NJDOT then provides median barriers designed to prevent such occurrences at identified locations.

 

NJDOT developed the Cross Median Accident Prevention Program in response to a series of cross median accidents that occurred on a single day in 2002.   NJDOT originally identified and treated 14 accident hot spots with medians less than 30 feet wide. Since then, NJDOT expanded the program to include Interstates and freeways with medians less than 60 feet wide.
