NJDOT announces weekend lane closure on I-78 westbound in Union Township
(Trenton) New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced an upcoming right lane closure on I-78 westbound in Union Township for the removal of existing noise walls at Stuyvesant and Walker Avenues.
Beginning at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 3, NJDOT will close the right travel lane on the I-78 local lanes from the Garden State Parkway to west of Stuyvesant Avenue. The lane will be re-opened to traffic by 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 4. Two I-78 westbound local lanes will remain open throughout the weekend.
NJDOT expects minimal traffic impacts for the duration of the lane closure. State Police will be present to ensure motorist and worker safety at the construction site.
This work will enable NJDOT to widen the Walker and Stuyvesant Avenue Bridges as part of the $42 million reconstruction of the local lanes of I-78 in Union County set to begin March 9. NJDOT will reconstruct approximately two miles of I-78 in Union Township, Union County, from Springfield Avenue to Walker Avenue. NJDOT will break up the existing concrete and construct hot-mix asphalt pavement on top of this base. The existing pavement will be removed and reconstructed in order to maintain vertical clearance beneath the Vauxhall Road, Burnet Avenue and Halsey Street bridges. Bridge decks, joints and railings will also be repaired.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website https://nj-dot.nj.gov/transportation/commuter/ for project and traffic updates.
