NJDOT announces Route 5 bridge replacement project in Palisades Park, Bergen County
(Trenton) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will start the reconstruction of Route 5 in the Borough of Palisades Park, Bergen County, on Monday, June 4, 2007.
“This project will improve safety by widening Route 5 and adding shoulders and increase the roadway’s efficiency and lifespan by replacing two obsolete bridges,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “NJDOT worked closely with the Palisades Park community in the development and design of this project, and we will do everything possible to complete the project on schedule and with as few traffic impacts as possible.”
The $24.6 million, State-funded project will replace the Route 5 Bridge over Delia Boulevard and reconstruct and widen Route 5 in order to accommodate a 12-foot travel lane and an eight foot shoulder in each direction. NJDOT also will demolish a bridge that carries Route 5 over an inactive railroad line, which will improve sight distance by lowering the elevation of the roadway. The project is scheduled to be completed in fall 2009.
From June 2007 to February 2008, a 0.6-mile detour will be required for Route 5 westbound traffic. Motorists on Route 5 westbound will be detoured to East Homestead Avenue, Fifth Street, Roff Avenue, and East Columbia Avenue. Additionally, a temporary traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Route 5, East Columbia Avenue and Abbott Avenue to improve traffic flow during the detour.
