NJDOT announces reconstruction of Route 22 bridges in Branchburg Township
(Trenton) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) starting Friday, August 10 will reconstruct the east- and westbound Route 22 bridges that cross over Station Road in Branchburg Township, Somerset County.
“NJDOT aims to rehabilitate and reconstruct the state’s roadway system through the use of innovative construction practices,” said Commissioner Kolluri, “This project will allow us to rebuild the Route 22 bridges with minimal impact to motorists.”
As part of the $4 million bridge reconstruction project, NJDOT will replace the bridge decks, improve drainage and install new safety railings. In addition, NJDOT will construct wider shoulders, resurface the bridge approaches and increase the eastbound bridge’s vertical under-clearance. Project completion is scheduled for February 2009.
To mitigate potential traffic impacts, NJDOT will build a temporary bridge over the median that separates the existing east- and westbound bridges. This two-lane structure will divert traffic from the closed work zone and allow motorists to continue to travel on Route 22 without interruption.
This project will be built in stages to ensure safety:
From August to October 2007, crews will position construction barrier on opposite sides of the median separating Route 22 East and West and construct the temporary bridge.
From November 2007 to May 2008, the Route 22 westbound bridge will be rebuilt. Motorists will use the two-lane temporary bridge to travel toward Route 22 West.
From June to October 2008, the Route 22 eastbound bridge will be rebuilt. Motorists will use the two-lane temporary bridge to travel toward Route 22 East.
Six weekend detours are planned for motorists traveling on Station Road. Two detours will be implemented during each of the above construction stages. Detour routes will be posted at Readington Road, Raritan Valley College Drive and Easton Turnpike to ease travel flow through the area.
Variable Message Signs will be installed on Route 22 to alert motorists about traffic pattern changes and construction. Additional information including real-time traffic updates is available via the NJDOT website at https://nj-dot.nj.gov/transportation/commuter/.
