NJDOT closes ramp from Interstate 78
to Hillside Avenue and Johnson Avenue in Newark
(Trenton)--The New Jersey Department of Transportation today announced the July 30 closure of the Exit 56 ramp from Route 78 to Hillside Avenue and Johnson Avenue in Newark.
“The Route 78 ramp improvements will rehabilitate the roadway infrastructure while improving neighborhood safety by separating interstate highway traffic from Newark’s local roadways,” said Commissioner Kris Kolluri.
The closure of the ramp from I-78 to Hillside Avenue and Johnson Avenue will enable NJDOT to realign the I-78 exit ramp to West Runyon Street. Motorists will be directed to West Runyon Street and Elizabeth Avenue to access local streets and downtown Newark.
This $20 million, federally-funded project began in July 2005 and will improve access between I-78 and the local street network in the City of Newark. Existing exit ramps at milepost 56.4 will be reconfigured and improvements to local streets also are scheduled. Completion of this project is slated for September 2007.
NJDOT has placed Variable Message Signs along the I-78 corridor to alert motorists of the upcoming traffic changes. Additional information is available via the NJDOT website at www.njcommuter.com.
