Safety to be improved for pedestrians crossing railroad tracks on Route 35 in Monmouth County

“Improving the Route 35 railroad crossings will increase pedestrian safety and alleviate congestion in Little Silver, Red Bank and Shrewsbury,” noted Commissioner Kolluri.

The $700,000 safety improvement project will provide pedestrian crosswalks in the vicinity of NJ TRANSIT’s North Jersey Coast Line on Route 35, north of the tracks at Maple Avenue and Broad Street and south of the tracks on Newman Springs Road. In addition, NJDOT will install sidewalks and pedestrian gates at the railroad crossings and build fences on both sides of Route 35 to prevent pedestrians from crossing the tracks.

NJDOT will improve traffic flow by adjusting the traffic signal timing. The new traffic signal timing system will provide a green signal to motorists located at the intersections’ heaviest point of demand once the railroad gates are raised. In addition, the project will improve motorist safety by building a median to separate the north and southbound travel lanes of Route 35 at Maple Avenue.

NJDOT planned construction in a manner that will minimally impact traffic. NJDOT may decrease lane width during the day and temporarily close single lanes overnight.

NJDOT has installed Variable Message Signs (VMS) on Route 35 to inform motorists of any changes in traffic patterns during nighttime operations. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website, www.njcommuter.com for project updates.
