NJDOT announces Route 28 corridor improvements
in Somerset County

(Trenton)- NJDOT officials today announced the start of improvements to Route 28 at Division Street in Somerville, North Gaston Avenue in Somerville and Mountain Avenue in Bound Brook, Somerset County.

“Improving this vital corridor is imperative to the safety of our residents and commuters,” said Commissioner Kolluri. “NJDOT is committed to making these improvements with as little disruption as possible.”

The project will proceed simultaneously at three locations: Route 28 at Division Street (milepost 3.28 to 3.30), Route 28 from Main Street to Eastern Ave (milepost 3.80 to 4.31) and Route 28 from Highland Place to Mountain Avenue (milepost 7.14 to 7.95).

The $2.1 million project will include operational and pedestrian improvements. NJDOT will replace and repair sidewalks, curbs and traffic signals and provide pedestrian signals and push buttons along Route 28. NJDOT will mitigate flooding by improving the drainage system and improve operational safety by installing left turn lanes at Route 28/Union Avenue westbound onto North Gaston Avenue and Route 28/ Union Avenue eastbound onto Vosseller Avenue and an improved left turn lane at Route 28/ North Gaston Avenue westbound onto Main Street. In addition, NJDOT will landscape Route 28. The project is scheduled to be completed in August 2008.

One lane of Route 28 traffic will be maintained in each direction. Both shoulders at Route 28 and Division Street, from Highland Place to Mountain Avenue and from Main Street to Eastern Avenue will be closed. Alternating lane closures may be required elsewhere on Route 28 and will be announced in advance of implementation.

In order to facilitate construction, NJDOT on August 27 will close Division Street northbound between Route 28 and South Street. Traffic will be detoured onto South Street and South Bridge Street.

Variable Message Signs along the work corridor will alert motorists to upcoming traffic pattern changes. Motorists can also visit https://nj-dot.nj.gov/transportation/commuter/ for additional, real-time information.
