NJDOT announces Route 87
Absecon Inlet Bridge repair project
(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced the September 17 start of
the Route 87 Absecon Inlet Bridge repair project in Brigantine and Atlantic City, Atlantic County.
“This project will extend the lifespan of the Route 87 Absecon Inlet Bridge by protecting it from naturally occurring marine corrosion,” said
Commissioner Kolluri.
The $7.4 million project entails painting the bridge’s structural steel as well as improving drainage, waterproofing the bridge deck and repairing the
shoulders and median barriers. The project is scheduled for completion in May 2008.
The U-turn ramps prior to Route 87 Absecon Inlet Bridge in the City of Brigantine will be closed through September 14 in order to provide painting
crews safe access to the underside of the bridge. Motorists traveling eastbound will use a road crossover approximately 300 yards past the existing
u-turn ramp while the closure is in effect. Motorists traveling westbound should follow detour signs to Harrah's for u-turns.
In addition, NJDOT will close 1,500 feet of the right lane of eastbound Route 87 from September 17, 2007 through May 2008. Periodic single lane
closures will be necessary on westbound Route 87 through the spring of 2008. No long-term closures will take place during peak spring and summer months.
Motorists are encouraged to drive safely through the construction zone. Variable Message Signs will be posted to alert the public about upcoming
traffic pattern changes and lane closures.
