NJDOT to replace bridge decks on I-280 over
Eagle Rock Road and Passaic Avenue in Roseland
(Trenton) – Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) on Monday,
September 17 will begin the reconstruction of the I-280 eastbound bridges over Eagle Rock Road and Passaic Avenue in Roseland, Essex County.
“These much-needed bridge deck replacements further demonstrate the Department’s commitment to improving our transportation infrastructure and the
quality of life for Essex County residents and motorists on this highly traveled section of I-280,” said Kolluri.
The $5 million project will replace the two deteriorated bridge decks located on either side of the I-280 eastbound structure over the Morristown and
Erie Railroad, which was replaced last year.
In order to expedite construction and minimize the traffic impacts, NJDOT will use pre-cast deck structures and shift eastbound traffic to the
westbound lanes.
The following traffic shifts and lane closures will be implemented:
- Beginning Friday, September 28, NJDOT will close one westbound lane of I-280 in Roseland for a period of approximately 50 days in order to move
eastbound traffic to the westbound roadway. An additional westbound lane may be closed overnight as well.
- Beginning Friday, October 5, I-280 eastbound traffic will be shifted to the westbound roadway between Exits 4 and 5. The new traffic pattern will
carry two lanes of eastbound and westbound traffic and will be separated by a construction barrier. The ramps from Eisenhower Parkway (Exit 4) to
I-280 eastbound will be closed and ramp traffic will detour via I-280 westbound to Exit 1 (Edwards / New Road) and then back to I-280 eastbound.
Construction is scheduled to be completed in late November 2007.
NJDOT will install Variable Message Signs on I-280 to inform motorists of the lane closures. In addition, NJDOT will post directional signs throughout
the detour route to guide motorists. Real time travel and construction information is available online at
