State of New Jersey awards $78.75 million to counties
Local aid will improve roads and bridges and relieve property taxes
(Trenton) – Commissioner Kris Kolluri today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) will award $78.75
million in County Aid (pdf 8k) to fund street improvement, rehabilitation and safety projects in all 21 New Jersey counties. The funds will provide
infrastructure improvements, property tax relief, new job opportunities and a better quality of life for New Jersey residents.
"The Fiscal Year 2008 County Aid program reflects the State of New Jersey’s commitment to property tax relief and improving local transportation
infrastructure,” said Governor Corzine. “This Transportation Trust Fund allocation will help ensure the continued safety of County roads and bridges
and bolster the State’s local economies.”
“NJDOT is pleased to help counties maintain and improve their roadway infrastructure while eliminating the financial burden normally imposed by
construction,” said Commissioner Kolluri.
Each year, NJDOT awards transportation grants to New Jersey’s 21 counties. County Aid funds are appropriated annually by the Legislature for the
improvement of public roads, bridges and transportation under county jurisdiction. County programs cover a variety of project types including bridge
repair and replacement, road resurfacing, rehabilitation or reconstruction and signalization.
NJDOT funds approximately 100 county highway and bridge projects each year. Governor Corzine in Fiscal Year 2007 increased NJDOT’s County Aid
allocation by $11.25 million to $78.75 million.
